Studies on Bacterial Enzymes

The meningococcus cell contains a peptonase enzyme which hydrolyzes the peptides and similar constituents of commercial "peptone." The activity of this enzyme is independent of the presence of the formed bacterial cell. The peptonase enzyme is more resistant to heat and to oxidation than is the maltase enzyme of the same bacteria.

Studies on the Enzymes

In the preceding paper (1) are recorded the facts so far obtained in a study of the proteolytic enzymes of pneumococcus. It has been shown that bile solutions of pneumococci, extracts obtained by disintegration of the organisms in phosphate mixtures, and sterile filtrates of autolyzing broth cultures possess the power to hydrolyze peptones and to a less extent certain intact proteins. In the pr...

Studies on Bacterial Localization

THE RESULTS OF GROSS AND MICROSCOPIC OBSERVATIONS AND SURVIVAL TESTS AFTER SUBCUTANEOUS INFECTION OF MICE WITH TYPE I PNEUMOCOCCI CAN BE SUMMARIZED AS FOLLOWS: Normal mice possessed no adequate means of protection against this organism. The bacteria disseminated freely through the tissue spaces in the presence of widespread inflammation, and were not ingested by significant numbers of host cell...

Studies on Bacterial Nutrition

1. Certain anaerobic bacteria grow under aerobic conditions in plain broth in the presence of sterile unheated plant tissue. 2. Aerobic growth of anaerobic bacteria under the above conditions may be related to the presence of growth-accessory substances, and to the action of oxidizing-reducing systems of plant tissue in the destruction of toxic peroxides of bacterial origin.

Studies on bacterial utilization of uronic acids. III. Induction of oxidative enzymes in a marine isolate.

MacLeod et al. (1954) noted that a number of strains of bacteria from the marine environment which can not grow on fresh water media are dependent upon Na+, K+, and Mg++, whereas several similar isolates capable of growth on fresh water media have no Na+ dependence. A subsequent investigation of the effect of these metal ions on the viability in storage and the activity of oxidative systems of ...
